Hi, Jeff!

I'm so sorry but I just today saw your comment at the bottom of my blog post about the above referenced event.

Please, feel free to quote me--I LOVED it! I loved every woman up there on the stage!

Dear Cheryl,

I'm so glad you enjoyed the show! I find that my favorite burlesque performers exude confidence, and now that I'm thinking about it, they're all over the age of 30, or close to it. There's a certain grace and sophistication that comes with age and when it comes to burlesque, confidence and making a connection with the audience is so important. It takes courage and comfort with one’s own abilities and appearance to do that. I have also found that my definition of "perfect" when it comes to women's bodies has changed in my years of performing burlesque. I've had the pleasure of watching hundreds of burlesque shows and performers of varying shapes and sizes, and as I've recognized the beauty in my peers, my definition of perfect has drastically broadened. Honestly though, most of the girls in the Queens of Burlesque competition fit the current societal ideal of beauty, and if they don’t, I might be living under a rock -- a rhinestoned burlesque rock!

When it comes to losing some of the feminine mystique because of jeans and ponytails, I disagree. Just a few years ago the feminine mystique was defined as the tendency for women to find their identity and self-worth based solely on the roles given to them by their family, husbands and children. Luckily, these days more of us have a greater tendency to create our own sense of identity, and our confidence comes from within, rather than simply being a reflection of how others perceive us to be. While I love dressing up like my favorite stars of the silver screen and don heels and feathers, I find that when I wear my favorite jeans and wife-pleaser undershirts I turn just as many heads… or at least I think I do. Maybe I’m just not paying that much attention. Comfort is beautiful. Confidence is beautiful. Being healthy and strong is beautiful. I’m honored to be a part of this community that believes these things to be true.

All my best,

 Love, Coco Lectric

Every woman is beautiful in her own way, as true beauty comes from the inside. We agree that women who present themselves with confidence are the sexiest of all.”
